Genetic Testing & Privacy

There are safeguards in place to protect your privacy and make sure your personal health data is not used to discriminate against you. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA) prohibits health insurers from using genetic information to make coverage, underwriting, and premium decisions.

However, GINA does not cover all the risks to consider before you proceed. These risks may include losing:

  • Long-term care insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • Employment with a company that has 14 or fewer employees

Some state laws may have protections. You can search the Genome Statute and Legislation Database by state.
